Assisted bicycles in Quebec

Article 492.2 of the Road Safety Code (C.s.r.) which determines the rules to follow. This article states that:

The driver must be at least 18 years old or, failing that, hold a class 6D license (moped).

The driver must wear a bicycle helmet.

The bicycle must bear a label affixed by the manufacturer in a removable manner stating that it is an assisted bicycle.

The bicycle must comply with the standards set out in the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.

Therefore, this type of vehicle must meet the following conditions:

  • a) it has handlebars and is equipped with pedals.

  • (b) it is designed to roll on no more than three wheels in contact with the ground.

  • c) it can be propelled by muscular effort.

  • d) it is equipped with one or more electric motors having, alone or in group, the following characteristics:

  • The total rated continuous output power, measured at the shaft of each motor, does not exceed 500 W.

  • If it is triggered by muscular effort, propulsion by the motor stops as soon as the effort ceases.

  • If it is engaged by an acceleration command, propulsion by the engine stops as soon as the brakes are applied.

  • It no longer has a training effect when the speed of the assisted bicycle reaches 32 km/h on flat ground.

e) It bears a label, affixed by the manufacturer in an irremovable manner and clearly visible, which specifies in both official languages that it is a power-assisted bicycle within the meaning of this paragraph.


f) it is equipped with mon the following safety devices:


  • An on-off mechanism for starting and stopping the electric motor, which is separate from the throttle control and is installed so that it can be operated by the driver.

  • A mechanism that prevents the engine from engaging before the bicycle has reached a speed of 3 km/h. (Power-assisted bicycle).
